Only one more day and the much awaited new term will kick off.  If you still haven’t registered and want to secure a place in class, it’s not too late, there are still a few places left.  Click HERE to check out the schedule for the upcoming term.

If you are a returning B1 student you have the choice of repeating or moving up one level.  Remember this is not a competition, work at your own pace and enjoy yourself.  It took me months to master certain movements, so do not be disheartened and certainly do not compare yourself to fellow students.  Everyone will have one or two moves that they find challenging.  As a general rule, it is best to stay at a class level until you feel you have built the movements into your muscle memory.  If you feel comfortable with the range of movements however I would strongly suggest moving up to B2, since here we’ll revise and build upon B1 knowledge, introducing new moves and combinations.  If still in doubt please do not hesitate to contact me.

Students in B2 and I1 will also be exposed to live Egyptian and Maltese tabla players during some classes and as the previous B2 can attest, a live tabla brings a lot of vibrancy to the class. Ya Habibi classes are the only classes in Malta that feature live tabla.

If you are a current student and you want to supplement your programme by additional classes, then the new CLASS CARD / PAY-AS-YOU-GO system is for you.  This is aimed at students who are currently enrolled in any one of the technique programmes and wish to take on additional classes.   Use your class card to attend additional technique classes at or below your levels OR for specialty one-off classes of the same value.

As a general rule, I am not able to accept drop-ins by non-current students during technique programmes.  However those who wish to give bellydancing a try without committing to a whole course, I will be holding a special one off taster on Wednesday 6th January.  Call me for more info!

As announced in my earlier email, 2010 will see the launch of regular HAFLA’s.  Here’s your first party for the year: Friday 29th of January.  Mark it on your calendar, bring your friends and let’s party

The first Ya Habibi School Showcase will be held in Baystreet, date to be announced shortly.  Participation is entirely optional, although strongly encouraged.  Those interested in taking part please let me know!

Here’s wishing you a healthy and prosperous New Year full of shimmies, hip drops and undulations!

Yours in bellydance,

Jane

Happy Holidays!

December 24, 2009

Dear friends and members of YaHabibi,

Christmas is at the doorstep and it is with great pleasure that I announce the new classes for the new year.  As you will see, there has been some minor tweaking to the timetable and for this session, I’ve also extended the lesson duration for B2 and I1 to allow time for choreography. Students in B2 and I1 will also be exposed to live tabla players during some classes.  As the previous B2 can attest, a live tabla brings a lot of vibrancy to the class.  In addition, monthly specialty classes, such as shimmy bootcamps and additional choreography workshops are being planned – details of which will be annouced in due time.

For the first time, I’m also introducing a “drop-in” concept for current students.  This is aimed at students who are enrolled in any one of the technique programmes and wish to supplement their training by attending additional classes during the current session.  See below for more details.

Next year, I intend to organise monthly HAFLA’s.  For those unfamiliar with the term, Hafla is basically the Arabic word for PARTY!  Essentially, a hafla thrown by a bellydancer involves Middle Eastern music, dancers taking turns performing for each other, and some open-floor dancing for everyone to get up and enjoy the music. At the end of the term, there will also be a student showcase in Baystreet.  Please note performing in public showcases, although highly encouraged, is entirely optional.  However if your concern revolves costuming, please talk to me as there are other more “conservative” options.

To those who have participated in the last session –  THANK YOU for bringing such energy and joy to the classes! Congratulations to each and everyone of you – you have all done so well and I am very impressed by your progress.  May I also take this opportunity to applaude the B2 students for their first performance last Saturday – they did an amazing job in just two weeks! I hope that you have all enjoyed the lessons, and look forward to seeing you again.

May you all have a very Merry Christmas and a healthy peaceful New Year!

 Yours in bellydance,

Jane

A Note on Class Progression:

Returning B1 students can either repeat or move up one level.  As a general rule, it is best to stay at a class level until you feel you have built the movements into your muscle memory.  Studying any kind of dance is  not something to rush but to savour.  It can take months to master certain movements, so don’t be disheartened.  However, if you feel comfortable with the range of movements taught during the B1 programme, then do move up to B2 since we will revise and build upon the B1 knowledge whilst introducing new moves and combinations.  If in doubt, please contact me.
